Your Future is My Priority.

NANCY

VAN ROOY

Municipal Election 2026 - City of Pickering

October 19 – 26, 2026

Vote Nancy Van Rooy for Regional Councillor Ward 2

ACTION. COMMITMENT. COMMUNICATION.

These are my priorities to Ward 2 residents.

A Lifetime of Service. A Commitment to Our Community.

Nancy Van Rooy has spent her life serving others — through a 33-year career with Durham Regional Police Service and nearly 40 years of volunteer leadership throughout Pickering, Ajax and Durham Region.

Born in Toronto and raised in Mississauga, Nancy developed a strong commitment to leadership and community at an early age. At Holy Name of Mary High School, she was an accomplished athlete, competing in track and field and swimming at the provincial level. She was also selected to represent her school at the Ontario Provincial Leadership Camp at Lake Couchiching and began volunteering at a hospital as a teenager.

Nancy attended the University of Toronto, St. George, studying Natural Sciences and Criminology. After graduating, she joined Durham Regional Police Service in 1987, where she served for 33 years in front-line policing, supervision, investigations, corporate communications and forensic services throughout Durham Region, including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. She retired in 2020.

Throughout her career, Nancy remained deeply committed to her community. For almost four decades, she has volunteered with numerous not-for-profit organizations, serving as a Director, Vice Chair and Chair. She was the founding Co-Chair of Girls Inc. of Durham and has held three board appointments with the organization over the past 20 years, helping support its growth and development.

Nancy was also a long-term board member and former Vice Chair of Herizon House, a shelter supporting abused women and children, and spent a decade mentoring a young girl through the former Big Sisters of Ajax-Pickering. She served as Co-Chair of the Community Advisory Committee with Lakeridge Health Ajax-Pickering for three years.

Nancy currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Glendale Tennis Club and is completing her third term as President. She is also an Executive Member of the Rotary Club of Pickering, where she plays a key role in organizing the annual Pickering Ribfest.

Supporting youth, families and sport has also been a lifelong priority. Nancy served for 15 years on a Durham Regional Police committee that organized the annual Children’s Special Olympics in Pickering, and spent 15 years as a skating manager for synchronized skating teams competing at local, provincial and national levels. During her policing career, she also competed in the Law Enforcement Games, earning medals in cycling, and represented Durham Regional Police in competitive soccer.

Nancy’s career and community service have given her a deep understanding of the people, organizations and communities that make Durham Region such a special place to live.

Now, Nancy is ready to bring her lifetime of public service, leadership and community experience to the role of Regional Councillor for Ward 2.

Nancy looks forward to bringing her experience to the table, working collaboratively with Council and serving on committees within the City of Pickering and Durham Region once elected. She is committed to putting her experience to work for residents and building a stronger, more affordable and better-planned future for Pickering and Durham Region.

  1. Affordability

Pickering and Durham Regional municipal taxes are some of the highest in Ontario.  Families here are also financially strapped with high food and gas prices, to name just a few constraints. Families need attainable housing along with affordable options. Let’s not shut out this next generation. Developers need to tailer their home building to reflect the buyers current market.

  2. Responsible development

Let’s put the horse before the cart and ensure the infrastructure can sustain our projected urban development. Seniors are looking to downsize their current homes in Pickering but want one floor bungalows to live comfortably within into their golden years. Small subdivisions of bungalows would go a long way to keep the golden generation and their investments here in our City.

  3. Infrastructure and transportation

Phase out fuel only buses in our public transportation network and downsize and sell off those larger buses (not utilized to capacity) to other jurisdictions. Bring in a fleet of smaller sized buses for economical savings. Many current routes have empty larger buses day and night.
Track the ridership and adjust the fleet dimensions. Promote and purchase more hybrid diesel and electric buses. Infrastructure is paramount to a well run community. Green space is paramount to a healthier and more active community. Spend on places for community groups and residents to gather safely to enjoy the beauty of our City.

  4. Small business support & development

Around the City, too many commercial spaces remain vacant and under utilized. Small business owners need incentives to step forward to compete with the big box stores and large chains. Small businesses are unique and contribute to the community vibe of this vibrant City. Let’s find a method to attract and keep small businesses thriving and show our community spirit! These businesses represent families and residents and are the proud owner.

  5. Community management

The strength and character of our City and Region, is contingent upon the participation of all of its parts: residents; businesses; elected officials; organizations; faith based institutions; school boards and the list continues. Make council available and open to the people. Create frequent town halls for dialogue and social contacts. Return in person council meetings back to the people. No one wants to hide behind the keyboard. The City needs and wants and thrives with opportunities for social exchanges.

Together, let’s tackle...

To Whom It May Concern,

I am pleased to write this letter in support of Nancy van Rooy, whom I have had the privilege of knowing for approximately 30 years as both a patient and a valuable member of the Pickering community.

Over these many years, I have come to know Nancy as an exceptional woman of integrity, responsibility, and character. She is highly respectable, trustworthy, and dependable, and she consistently conducts herself with professionalism and genuine consideration for others.

Nancy’s career in law enforcement speaks to her strong sense of responsibility, dedication to service, and ability to work effectively in challenging circumstances. In my experience, she has demonstrated many of the qualities associated with strong leadership: sound judgment, accountability, compassion, and the ability to earn the trust and respect of those around her.

Having known Nancy and her wonderful family for over three decades, I can say with confidence that she is someone who takes her responsibilities seriously and is committed to contributing positively to her community. I have great respect for her character and for the dedication she has demonstrated throughout her career and personal life.

I am very pleased to endorse Nancy van Rooy and wish her every success in her pursuit of municipal office in Durham Region.

Sincerely,

“As a family-owned business in South Pickering, we see every day how local and regional decisions affect our customers, our staff, and our community. One of our greatest concerns is the ongoing congestion on Brock Road and Bayly Street, which has made it increasingly difficult for our customers, suppliers, and our staff to reach our store and has placed unnecessary strain on businesses and residents across Ward 2. As Pickering has grown, the local infrastructure has not kept pace and we are close to a breaking point.

We are also deeply concerned about crime and public safety in our neighbourhood. Business owners in South Pickering needs strong, practical representation from someone who understands both the pressures facing local businesses and the importance of safe, accessible communities.

For these reasons, we are endorsing Nancy Van Rooy for Regional Councillor, Ward 2. Her background in law enforcement, her knowledge of the community, and her commitment to listening to residents and businesses make her the better choice to represent Ward 2 at both the City of Pickering and the Region of Durham. We need a full time Regional Councillor to properly represent us and Nancy in the perfect candidate!”

“I first met Nancy van Rooy over a decade ago, when she arrived at the Glendale Tennis Club in Pickering. As a new member, Nancy had a desire to learn a new sport.

Quickly, I learned Nancy is a strong and capable person who enjoys challenges; is an HONEST and HARDWORKING professional and is also a deeply committed volunteer in our community.

Nancy has volunteered for many years at our club in several BOARD OF DIRECTOR roles, and her leadership over the last three years as President of Glendale, the largest community-based tennis club in Durham Region, has proven she has the right skillset to organize, manage, supervise, COMMUNICATE and support a large non-profit sports club with ease.

As a people person, she is a TRUSTED and CONFIDENT LEADER.

Nancy will bring a valuable personal and professional skillset if elected as a Regional Councillor in the City of Pickering.

Vote for Nancy van Rooy for Regional Councillor, Ward 2."
